Christmas 'Santa Bus' raises over £1,000 for a local children's holiday charity

A Christmas campaign has raised a grand total of £1,829 for a local charity, thanks to the generosity of passengers who travelled on the specially decorated 'Santa Bus'.

Throughout December, Santa was behind the wheel of a Stagecoach bus, which served all areas across Havant, Portsmouth & Waterlooville, raising money for Sam's Haven, a charity who provide short respite holidays at a Haven Holiday Park, for families who have children with a life threatening or terminal illness.

Colin Ashcroft , Stagecoach Operations Manager for the area said that the traditionally decorated Santa Bus, complete with festive music and gifts for children, and driven by Santa himself , proved popular with customers, particularly families.

He said “Our santa bus has become a great tradition for the local community and each year we receive such great feedback that this year we decided on launching it earlier, at the start of December, to maximise the opportunities for our customers to enjoy the festive ride."

“We are delighted to be supporting Sam's Haven and I’m sure that our customers will be pleased knowing that they have helped raise such an amazing amount for a great charity".

The 2016 Santa bus team included bus driver Douglas Cook as Santa, along with 'Elf's' Emma-Jane Bryant and Charlotte Lilly, who all went above and beyond, and really got into the Christmas spirit.

Paul Merrick, from Sam's Haven said: “We are incredibly grateful to Colin and his team at Stagecoach in Portsmouth for choosing to support our charity and to the passengers who have given so generously.”

The Sam's Haven charity was set up three years ago to provide short respite holidays for severely ill children in the area, by Paul and Louise Merrick, after being inspired by their son Sam who has spent much of his life in hospital with on-going complications.

Paul added ‘It’s amazing how a three or four-day break can make a world of difference to these families".~

A big thank you to Cyril Hilton from the Waterlooville Bowling Club for selecting Sam's Haven as his chosen charity for this season.  Thank you also to all the members that took part in the charity day raising £205 and to all those that donated in other ways.

All their efforts resulted in a very much appreciated cheque for an impressive £520 being presented by Cyril Hilton to Paul, the Chairman of Sam's Haven, during a ceremony attended by members of the bowling club.

Further pictures of the charity day can be found on the bowling club's website below.

A very appreciative thank you from all at Sam's Haven to our sponsor, Thomas Sanderson, for their continuing support by recently matching the amount of £348 raised by Lee Steel during his sponsored charity bike ride from Waterlooville to Great Ormond Street Hospital earlier this year. www.thomas-sanderson.co.uk

We have been VERY lucky to be short listed for two sainsburys stores this year for their yearly charity.

The North End branch have kindly put us forward again and this year we are also in Waterlooville. If you're in either store PLEASE vote for us or follow the link below and type in Portsmouth, London Road or Waterlooville.

Waitrose in Waterlooville put us forward as the local charity to attend the Queen's official 90th birthday celebrations at Windsor Castle and we won the vote.

On the 14th May we dressed very smartly and off we went for some tea, cake and an evening of  outstanding entertainment.

What a fantastic opportunity this was for us all and for Sam's Haven. Thank you to all the staff who put us forward and voted.

Thank you to all those that donated to the community matters fund over the Christmas period in the Waterlooville Waitrose store. Every bit of change you donate adds up to a great amount and £241 will go a long way.

Due to Sam's recent ill health we have not been able to collect the cheque until today.

We have received a massive donation from 1st Choice Transport on our JustGiving page.

Unfortunately we are unable to get any more information so can't thank them personally. I just hope they are following us and see this post and know the difference that they will make.

A huge thank you to you all and a very Merry Christmas to you from us all at Sam's Haven.

Also thank you to Allen Merrick for the JustGiving donation and being the first to advertise in our new advertising area.  We hope to have many others follow in your foot steps.
